Sometimes the choices we make don’t seem to matter too much. For example, what we decide to wear today will most likely be forgotten tomorrow. But many of the choices we make on a daily basis do make a difference. They can impact us individually, as well as those closest to us. And some of those choices we will make today will determine what our lives will be like tomorrow, and in the years to come.
Whether it is a single choice, or ones that compound upon each other, the choices we make can determine the path our lives will travel. So making wise decisions, no matter how insignificant they may seem at the time, is of utmost importance. In each area of life, making the right choice can truly make a difference in the future we desire and the future God wants for us.
Let’s look at some wise choices in our spirit, mind, and body:
Spirit: We live in a time when we are faced with many options as to where we will place our faith; false teachers, self-improvement, new age teachings, and religions claiming to be truth. On the surface many of these sound good. They present a new outlook on life and a way for us to secure instant happiness. We must be extremely careful in what choices we make here, because these are choices that not only impact our physical existence, but our eternal life as well. You see, there is only one choice that will provide us joy for our journey now as well as the eternity we all desire, and that is to place our faith in Jesus Christ and to believe that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. All other options are false and will not give you the lasting peace and the eternal rewards that a deep, abiding faith in Christ can.
“…Then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve….but as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
Mind: Just like your spirit can be influenced by your choices, so can your mind. Where are you spending your time? What are you giving your thoughts to? If we continue to give our thought-life to things that are not pure, then we will reap a life that is sour, bitter, and empty of the peace that God’s Word promises. Anxieties, fear, and worry can be a result of a mind not controlled by the Spirit of God. Listen to the Apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 4:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”
Body: What I choose to put in my body can have a variety of adverse effects later in life. The foods we eat, the things we consume on a regular basis, and a lack of proper exercise will most likely catch up to us as we age. These are the choices that, when compounded upon each other, really do make a difference in our quality of life. As much as I like a good hamburger with a side of fries, if that is all I eat, I’ll pay the price down the road. Being wise about the way I treat my body today will reap great benefits later in life. If we genuinely want to treat our bodies the way they were designed, we would certainly make wise choices in this area.
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.” I Corinthians 6:19-20
Choices. They may not seem too important at the time, but many of them will make a difference in the journey of your life – not only today or tomorrow, but for all eternity. I encourage you to choose wisely. The vitality of your spirit, mind and body depends on it.
