A new school year means a fresh start for kids—a chance to start new routines and habits, build new friendships and discover new possibilities and interests. Back-to-school is a fresh start for youth and the people who care for them. As children transition from summer to fall, the Watertown Area YMCA is offering its Great Escape programs to school-aged children throughout Watertown and Johnson Creek School Districts to keep youth active, busy and engaged during out-of-school time. Through a holistic approach to youth development, the Great Escape program offers activities in a caring and safe environment during the critical hours after school. Whether through sports, mentorship, or academic support, the Y’s afterschool program’s staff nurtures the potential of youth throughout the school year.
At the end of the day when the school bell rings, 11.3 million kids are headed home to be unsupervised from 3 to 6 p.m, according to the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness advocacy organization. In Wisconsin, 22% of children are left alone and responsible for taking care of themselves. With a new school year about to begin, the Y encourages parents/caregivers to make sure that children are involved in safe, educational experiences after school hours.
“Learning enrichment after school is essential to increasing children’s success in school,” said Tom Sieger, Youth Development Director, Watertown Area YMCA. “The opportunity to get additional learning and support, as well as participate in meaningful activities can inspire children’s motivations and abilities to succeed.”
Great Escape is a Wisconsin State Licensed after school program available on site at local elementary schools. This program provides an opportunity for your child to socialize with other kids their age and participate in a variety of activities in a safe environment. Trained, professional and caring staff provide homework help, a healthy snack and a fun place for your child to start and end the day.
The Watertown Area YMCA is excited to announce we will also be offering a special “Early Release” program on Wednesdays during the school year. With school getting out early each Wednesday, we want to be there for you. School dismissal is at 2:00 pm, and from 2:00 – 2:30 the schools will be running an extended study hall. Starting at 2:30 pm, the YMCA will provide after school care for those that sign up. This program will be part of our regular Great Escape after school program, which is a state licensed program. Rosters fill up quick, so don’t miss your chance to sign up.
Registration information can be found at www.watertownareaymca.org under “Child Care.” Or, call Tom Sieger at 920-262-8555 to discuss registration.
