New This Year at the YMCA

The Watertown Area YMCA’s Health and Wellness Department will be offering several new programs and classes in 2015 to better serve Y members and meet the community’s needs.

“Chair to Champ”, a 10-week, beginner running program starts on Tuesday, January 6th.  The program’s goal is to help participants to be able to finish a 5k in March. Available to Y members, the $10 fee includes a running technique demo from Performance Running Outfitters and advice from professional runners.  The weekly training sessions will include coaching from Y fitness staff and a program to follow based on the individual’s fitness level and running experience.

Active Older Adults now have more choices to help them stay healthy, active and independent.  Fitness classes that were recently added include AOA Cardio and Restore, Mondays at 9:30am and AOA Circuits at 9:30 on Wednesdays, taught by Jess Mlsna.  A special session of Intro to Silver Sneakers is offered January 6, 8, 13 & 15 for those new to exercise, taught by Lea Fischer.  Silver Sneakers Classic is offered at 9:30am Monday, Wednesday and Friday, taught by Andrea Fisher.  Silver Sneakers Yoga Stretch is on Thursdays at 9:30am, taught by Lea Fischer. All Silver Sneakers classes use a chair for seated exercises and for standing support.   Special events for Active Older Adults/Silver Sneakers are planned for February and April, including a trip to The Harvest Market and a Friday Night Fish Fry.

Member incentives are planned for January and February.  January is a “selfie” scavenger hunt and February is “Run the Y”, a members vs. staff run/walk challenge.

The YMCA will also offer 4 new group exercise classes starting January 5th that are free to members.  Community participants can purchase punch cards for $8 per class.  These classes are in addition to the 8 different class styles that are already offered.  The new classes include “Spark” Boot Camp taught by Debbie Blasing on Sundays, noon to 1pm; B3-BOSU, Bodyweight and (Kettle)bells taught by Kelly Wendorff. 5:30-6:15pm on Wednesdays; Intro to Group Exercise taught by Andrea Fisher on Thursdays, 6:15-7pm and Cardio Movement, taught by Becky Brown, 9:30-10:15am on Tuesdays.

The Martial Arts Program is on Monday and Wednesday evenings, taught by Grand Master Bob Crouch, starting at 5:30.  Class times are based on skill and belt levels.  TRX Suspension Training is offered on Monday at 6:15pm and Friday at 9:30am.  Special Programs Fitness Friends will be on Thursdays at 6pm.  Special Programs Fun Friday is scheduled for February 19 from 6-8pm.  There are additional fees for these programs.

For a full description and schedule of the classes, see the Y’s website, www.watertownareaymca.org or the Watertown Area YMCA’s Facebook page.   For more information, please contact Dawn Liddicoat at dliddicoat@watertownareaymca.org or call the Y at 920-262-8555.
